The "Mafia" was known as the Yakuza. I suspect a great many bar girls went into debt with the bar owners. When I went to some clubs in Naminoue (1967-68) I'd pay $1 for a drink, the bar girl would get half and the bar half. As far as I knew, they were free to leave-(at least one kind gal I knew). She liked me, so she would leave the bar with me soon after I came in. Doing that did not endear her to the owners though. I think she got into some big problems over that. I lost contact and only found her with the help of the club "Barker" whom I'd befriended. He'd hang out in front of the club getting GI's to come in. One night he drove me into the suburbs of Naha to find her at her home (?). We finally located her at a hotel a few blocks west of Naminoue. Very sad & I was heartbroken! (hey, i wuz a young "Cherry boy" lol)
I can't say for sure what she was doing there but I'm pretty sure it was not voluntary. I know the above is true -it's a memory I didn't repress.
