okinawa trip advice - 2007/02/14 02:23 Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on a trip I’m planning to Okinawa for some American study abroad students based in Kyoto.

I am particularly interested in hearing any traditional live music and dance or modern music influenced by traditional sources such as Ryukyu Underground. Does anyone know where I could find any cool music or other interesting events on the following dates, Feb 28th to Mar 3rd?

Also we are planning on going to one of the touristy theme parks. Does anyone have any thoughts on which would be better for a group of American college students, Okinawa World or Ryukyu Mura?

We only have 5 days in Okinawa and two of them are travel days. Our itenarary is as follows:

2/27- Arrival in Okinawa.
Go to hotel on Kokusai dori.
Explore Kokusai dori and the market place.

2/28 Visit one of the military bases for a tour.
Go to Shuri castle.

3/1 Visit the Japanese Navy underground HQ, the Himyuri caves and the peace museum. Go to a dinner show at Eiko Miyazato’s House of Performance Arts in Naha.

3/2 I’m not sure what to do on this day but I would like to visit either Okinawa world or Ryukyu Mura and see one other place. Any ideas? We heard that there might be some group that is involved with protecting endangered dugongs that we might be able to visit but were not sure if anyone there speaks English.

3/3 Morning free
Afternoon Departure

If anyone has any advice on changes that could be made or good restaurants or interesting things to see near the places we are going, please let me know. Any advice would be really appreciated. I know it’s an incredibly short trip but were coming from Kyoto so at least we won’t be jet lagged.

Much thanks,
Dan

Re:okinawa trip advice - 2007/02/17 05:21 It's been a few years since I've been to either Okinawa World or Ryukyu Mura. Okinawa World seemed bigger, better maintained and is in the south and could be included in your southern itinerary. Ryukyu Mura has buildings that are more authentic and is in Yomitan north of Kadena air base so you might consider packaging it with your American base day. I don't think you should go to both places. If you go to Yomitan you should probably take a couple hours to see the Yomitan Pottery Village which has a dozen ceramic workshops and a hillside kiln.
You should consider going to Shuri castle on your first day and enjoying Kokusai Street and the Makishi Public Market (Heiwa Dori) at leisure. When you visit the market be sure to wander a little beyond to the Tsuboya pottery district.
Since you guys are coming from Kyoto, you may have had your fill of culture, so you might consider a beach trip to either Tokashiki or Zamami islands. The ferry terminal is 10 minutes by taxi from Kokusai street. The ferry ride out is 1-2 hours and cost about 3000 yen round trip. It's whale watching season so you might get the bonus of sighting a few whales. Be sure to pick a nice weather day for this trip. It's not nearly as much fun when it's raining.
