Hey Denise, May is a great time of year to visit Okinawa. The first week of May is Golden Week in Japan and hotel prices will be more but you will be arriving in the later part of May. I've added a number of entries to low cost guest houses in this web site's Hotel section. Prices start at about $10 a night for dormitory bunks or $20 for a room. Okinawa is one of great travel bargains considering the cost of traveling in the rest of Japan. Food is pretty cheap here too. History is everywhere although visitors are often unaware that they may be standing on or near some ancient ruin or tomb or sacred spot. I also think Okinawa is one of the safest places to travel on the planet. Okinawans are extremely civilized and personal injury caused by crime is rare. I worry less about my 14 year old running around alone on Okinawa than I do in my US home of Santa Cruz. As always, use common sense and exercise due caution. The better beaches are north of Naha. You should consider taking a day trip to either Tokashiki or Zamami Islands. The roundtrip ferry from Naha Tomari terminal is less than $30 and you will be able to experience small villages as well as nice beaches. Enjoy and let us know how your trip went. --art b
