Tama Udun is the royal mausoleum of the Shuri kings of the second Sho dynasty, built in 1501 by King Sho Shin to house the remains of his father, King Sho En.
This world heritage site encompassing and area of 260,000 square feet was built in tht the side of natural rock formations. There are three chambers in the mausoleum. The middle was used to hold the remains until the bones were ready to be washed. The east chamber held the bones of the kings and queens. The other members of the royal family were interred in the west chamber. Tama Undun is next to Shuri Castle Park. This mausoleum remained the property of the decendants of the Sho royal family until it was given to government in 1992. |
