Chatan,Kadena, and Okinawa City lose funds

On the evening of the 29th of August, Ministry of Defense officials announced that Kadena town, Okinawa city and Chatan town would not qualify for special government subsidies from the Defense ministry.

The money was supposed to be given for hardships related to US-Japanese military training and exercises. Recently, a battery of Patriot Missiles (Pac-3) were transferred to Kadena Air Base, the largest U.S. Air Force base in the Asian region and the F-15 training flights were transferred to mainland Japan. The reason for the F-15 transfer has been the unrelenting pressure of coalitions of various Okinawan local protesters together with municipalities

Special funds were even available to local residents in the local Kadena town, Chatan town and Okinawa city areas to pay for sound proofing windows for residences. The Ministry of Defense reported that in there calculations of burden born by communities, that although the Patriot Missile battery added 2 points to their burden, the decrease of F-15 training activity decreased the overall burden by 7,5 points, making the three municipalities ineligible.
